Professor Ecaterina Andronescu

Biography:
Ecaterina Andronescu was born on 7th of April 1948 in Malovăț, Mehedinți County, România. She is married and has one child. She graduated The Faculty of Industrial Chemistry in 1972 and obtained her PhD degree in 1983. During the following years she attended many specializations within universities like Claude Bernard University in Lyon (France), Sevilla University (Spain), London University (UK), Darlington University (UK).
Professional Career:
Ecaterina Andronescu started her academic career in 1972 at University Politehnica of Bucharest as Assistant Lecturer, right after getting the bachelor’s degree. She gradually held positions of head of scientific papers, Associate Professor and Professor. In 1996 she gained the position of head of doctoral studies for chemical engineering field.
The results obtained throughout her teaching and research career are being capitalized in more than over 300 scientific papers, either published or presented in scientific conferences in Romania and abroad (more than 160 papers indexed in Scopus database), 1 patent, 9 books and university courses. She is also coordinator for more than 80 scientific research contracts with national and international funding. Positions held within the managerial structure of University Politehnica of Bucharest, as vice-dean, dean (1992-2004) and rector (2004-2012), proves her large experience within university management as well as in academic communities interactions. In 2012 she became the President of the Senate of the university.
Taking into consideration her positions held within the Ministry of Education and Research, she contributed in developing the educational system as well as the Romanian scientific research, by elaborating and implementing short, medium and long term educational strategies and policies. She also had initiatives meant to improve and streamline the Romanian educational system. During 1995-1996, she was appointed Secretary of State for Higher Education, and afterwards, she fulfilled three mandates as Minister of Education and Scientific Research (2001-2003, 2009, 2012).

Valeriu V. COTEA is born in Iași, on the 20th of May 1960. After graduating „C. Negruzzi“ College in Iași in 1979, he becomes a student of the Horticulture Faculty Iași, which he graduates in 1984. In 1991 he is granted the title of Ph.D in viticulture and
oenology. From 1999, he is full professor at the Horticultural Faculty within the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Iași. Starting from 1997, Valeriu V. Cotea becomes a scientific researcher level I at the Oenological Research
Centre of the Romanian Academy – Iași Branch. Throughout his career, he published as only author and co-author 20 books at well-known publishing houses, over 300 scientific articles as well as approximately 100 notes, reviews etc. He co-authored three
patents, as well. Starting from 1998, he is the delegated Romanian expert at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), where he takes regular stand in the meetings of this intergovernmental organisation. Within this organisation, he acted
as: President of the OIV Expert Group „International Code of Oenological Practices (2001-2006), President of the OIV Expert Group „Specifications of Oenological Products” (2007-2013), President of the Commission II Oenology (from 2012). Starting with 2001, he is a
member of the OIV Scientific and Technical Committee. In Romania, he is a member of the National Office of Vine and Wine, member of the Romanian Horticultural Society, member of the Romanian Retrology Society, member of the Romanian Authorized Wine Tasters Association
(ADAR). Due to his scientific activity, he was elected in 2009 as full member of the Romanian Academy for Agricultural and Forestry Sciences - ASAS (correspondent member since 2004). Professor Cotea is also a correspondent member of the Swiss Wine Academy (since
2001), correspondent member of the Italian Vine and Wine Academy (since 2002), as well as member of the „International Society for Horticulture Science” (I.S.H). He is also a member of the reading committee of the „Le Bulletin de l’OIV”, of the horti-viticultural
scientific journal „Mitteilungen Klosterneuburg“ from Austria and foreign correspondent of the „Revue des Oenologues“ from France. Since 2007 he is an expert of the working group "Oenological Practices" within the European Commission Directorate-General for
Agriculture and Rural Development. Between 2008-2012 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the Research Institute Geisenheim (Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim), Germany. In 2003, Valeriu V. COTEA is granted the „Order of Faithful Service”, and the „OIV Merit
Award” in 2009, for his scientific activity within the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
Main research fields are: Oenology, Technology of alcoholic drinks, Control and analysis of drinks, Traceability in the viticultural domain, Viti-vinicultural potential of Romanian vineyards.
Professor Jozef Drabowicz

Jozef Drabowicz: Born in 1946, studied at the University of Lodz (M.Sc. in 1969). Since then he has been employed at the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies (CMMS), PAS in Lodz. He got PhD under the supervision of Professor M. Mikolajczyk in 1975 and DSc (habilitation) (Lodz University- 1987). Since 1998 he has been Professor at the CMMS. Since 2002 he has been teaching at the Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, where since 2008 he has been Vice-Rector. He spent his postdoctoral stay at the University of Tsukuba, [with S. Oae (1976-1977)] and worked as a Research Associate with Professor Martin at Vanderbilt University (1989-1990)]. He was a Visiting Professor at Universities in Bologna, Halle and Caen. He is co-author of one book [“Chiral Sulfur Reagents: Applications in Asymmetric and Stereoselective Synthesis, CRC Press, Boca Raton, USA, 1998 (with M. Mikołajczyk and P. Kiełbasiński)] and more than 210 publication (148 research papers, 25 reviews and more than 40 monographic chapters including 16 chapters in “Science of Synthesis” – vol. 33, 39, 42 and 48). At present he is the Editor for “Science of Synthesis- Knowledge updates” Vol. 39. and Vol. 33 and member of the Editorial Board of ISRN Organic Chemistry. He has been a member of the International Advisory Board of the International Conference on the Organic Chemistry of Sulfur (since 2012) and chaired the 25th International Conference on the Organic Chemistry of Sulfur ( ISOCS-25) held in Czestochowa (Poland) in 2012. He was invited lecturer at more than 15 International Meetings and delivered more than 80 academic lectures at Universities and Research Institutes (Japan, Germany, USA, France, Italy, Denmark, Hungary, Belgium, Ukraine, Spain). His research interests are concentrated on chemistry and stereochemistry of heteroorganic compounds, synthetic methodology and asymmetric synthesis.
Professor Horia Iovu

Horia Iovu is professor of Polymer Composites and Engineering in the Department of Bioresources and Polymer Science from the University Politehnica of Bucharest. He is also the Head of Advanced Polymer Materials Group (www.tsocm.pub.ro/APMG) which is focused on research in polymer-based nanocomposites, biocomposites, controlled drug delivery systems, hybrid materials including thermosets and nanoreinforcing agents as carbon nanotubes, graphene, silica, etc. He has authored over 120 papers, 11 books and five patents concerning polymer science and polymer-based composites. Between 2004 and 2012 he was the Dean of Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Materials Science and since 2012 he was appointed as Vice-Rector –Director of the Council for Doctoral Studies in the university. He is also a correspondent member of the Academy of Romanian Scientists and a member of the Accreditation Council of National Authority for accreditation-RENAR. He is Editor-in-chief of “Materiale plastice” journal and a board member of Journal of Hydrogels.
Professor Ionel I. Mangalagiu

Ionel I. MANGALAGIU is born in Iași, on the 6th of July 1964. After graduating Medical High School in Iași in 1982, he becomes a student of the Chemical Technological Faculty (Politechnical Institute Iasi), which he graduates in 1990. In 1996 he is granted the title of Ph.D in organic chemistry under the supervision of Professor Magda Petrovanu. Since 2001, he is full professor at the Faculty of Faculty within the"Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, where since 2012 he is dean of faculty. He spent his postdoctoral stay at the University of Oslo, [with K. Undheim (1994-1995)]. He was a Visiting Professor at Ludwig Maximilianus University Munchen and Technische Universität Braunschweig. He was invited speaker to Universite D’Angers and Technische Universität Braunschweig and, received several fellowships: DAAD, NATO. He was invited lecturer at more than 15 International Meetings. He has supervised to successful completion, a total of more than 100 students for higher degrees, including 11 PhDs. He has over 20 years’ experience within the field of organic and heterocyclic chemistry. He is author and co-author of more than 150 papers, 13 books and chapters at well-known publishing houses, 12 patents. He was in charge as Director for 15 national projects, 1 NATO and 1 FP7 projects, and 2 bilateral projects with Moldova. He was awarded with several prizes and honours: “Costin D. Nenitescu Medal” (Romanian Society of Chemistry), “Al.I.Cuza University Award in Research”, “Grand Prize Euroinvent” (Euroinvent, Romania), Special Award of Croatian Association of Inventors, etc. He is member of the Editorial Board of Rev. Chim.-Bucharest, Acta Chimica Iasi and Curr. Microwave Chem.
Professor Shin'ichi Nakatsuji

Shin’ichi Nakatsuji is a Professor of Material Science and Organic Chemistry at Faculty of Science and Graduate School of Material Science, University of Hyogo, Hyogo, Japan.
He was born in Ehime, Japan in 1949 and obtained a PhD in 1977 at Osaka University on the chemistry of dehydroannulenes under the supervision of Professor Masazumi Nakagawa. After studying as a JSPS postdoctoral fellow at the same university, he joined in 1978 the Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences, Nagasaki University, as an assistant professor and worked with Professor Shuzo Akiyama in the field of dye chemistry and organic analytical chemistry. He worked one year (1984-1985) at the TH Darmstadt with Professor Klaus Hafner as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow. He was promoted to associate professor at Nagasaki University, and then in 1990 moved to the newly opened Faculty of Science in Himeji Institute of Technology (since 2004 University of Hyogo) and was appointed a professor in 1998.
He was a councillor of University of Hyogo in 2006-2008 and served as the Dean of School of Science and Graduate School of Material Science in 2010-2012. He was a board member of Himeji International Exchange Center in 2003-2005 and is a special public relations ambassador appointed by Himeji City since 2004.
He is the author or one of the co-authors of 9 books including a recent one, Nitroxide: Application in Chemistry, Biomedicine, and Materials Chemistry (Wiley-VCH), 15 reviews and book chapters as well as 12 patents. He has published over 220 scientific papers and has been awarded the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa from Technical University of Iasi in 2008.
Professor Vasile Pârvulescu

Prof. Vasile I. Parvulescu received his Diploma in Chemistry in 1979 and PhD in Catalysis in 1986 at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (Romania). After one year stage in the Petroleum Company Vega-Ploiesti (Romania) he moved in the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Rare and Non-Ferrous Metals Bucharest (Romania) till 1991, when he joined the University of Bucharest, where become full professor in 1999. Meantime he received several fellowships: PECO and NATO fellows, Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium (1993, 1996), Alexander von Humboldt, Max Planck, Muelheim, Germany (1997). He is also invited Professor of a series of Universities: Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), Aachen (Germany), Lille (France), Toulouse (France), Quebec (Canada), Taywen (China), etc. He has over 30 years’ experience within the field of synthesis of catalysts, catalysts characterization, asymmetric, environmental, oxidation, plasma catalysis, etc. He authored more than 265 papers, 16 monographies and chapters, 4 books (Wiley, RSC, Elsevier, Romanian Academy), 25 patents. He was in charge as Director with more than 100 national projects, 2 NATO, FP6 and FP7 projects, and many bilateral projects with France, Swiss, Greece, etc. He was awarded with the Prize of the Romanian Academy of Sciences and Proclaimed Knight of the National Order for Merit by the Romanian President. He serves as a President of the Romanian Catalytic Society and Secretary of the European Catalytic Society (2011-). He is member of the Editorial Board of Rev. Roum. Chim., Appl. Catal. A and Appl. Catal. B journals, Current Catalysis and Associate Editor of Frontiers. In present he serves as Director of the Department of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Catalysis and Director of the Research Centre of Catalysis and Catalytic Processes at University of Bucharest.

Professor Nicolas Szita

Nicolas Szita has significant expertise in microbioreactors and microfluidics, which encompasses performing cell cultivation in a microfluidic format, biochemical micro reactor design and microfluidic device fabrication, and the system-wide integration of microfluidic and analytical devices. For his doctoral degree at ETH Zurich (1996-2001), he created a microfluidic pipetting device from silicon and glass, with integrated capacitive sensors for the liquid handling of microlitre volumes with nanolitre precision. At MIT (2001-2005), as a post-doctoral researcher, he established multiplexed microfluidic bioreactors, and demonstrated highly reproducible parallel batch fermentations. This led to the first demonstration that multiplexed microbioreactors can be designed to provide in situ and real-time kinetic process data that are comparable with bench-scale reactor data. The microbioreactors were linked to gene expression analysis, analysed for glucose consumption, organic acid production, and for oxygenation capacity. During his time at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) (2005-2007), as a lecturer and group leader of the Biochemical Microreactors Group, he initiated doctoral projects on continuous culture microbioreactors for single use and which have led to international collaborations. At UCL (Senior Lecturer since 2007, Professor since October 2014), he has developed a microbioreactor for enzyme reactions integrated with inline filtration for the production of chiral metabolites. He has also developed a microfabricated cell culture device which permits the long-term culture of human and mouse embryonic cells. Current work includes the development and integration with monitoring concepts for cell confluency and dissolved oxygen to start quantifying stem cell culture processes.
Professor Colin Webb

Professor Colin Webb is Director of the Satake Centre for Grain Process Engineering (SCGPE) at the University of Manchester and currently Vice-President of IChemE. Colin’s research has always been at the interface between biotechnology and chemical engineering and nowadays is largely directed towards the sustainable bioconversion of agricultural raw materials and the development of integrated biorefinery systems. He has supervised to successful completion, a total of 115 students for higher degrees, including 34 PhDs. His 250+ publications include 11 books, and five patents. These have been cited around 4,500 times and his current H-index is 38. Colin is Editor-in-chief of The Biochemical Engineering Journal and is an editorial board member of several other biotechnology related journals. Amongst his honours and awards are 5 UK government SMART awards, the IChemE Hanson medal (2006) and the IChemE Bioprocessing Prize (2011). In 1999, Colin was honoured as the UK’s first Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology.
